Japanese Boiled Spinach (Horenso no Ohitashi) ほうれん草のおひたし

It is dinner time again, and Bit Bit found some baby spinach and egg tofu in the fridge. So Bit Bit decided to make a dish which Bit Bit had been thinking of making for a long time, and it is horenso no ohitashi.

This dish took about 20 minutes only.

Things that Bit Bit found out about horenso no ohitashi:
  • This dish is very healthy and low in calories, as the spinach is boiled and no oil is used.
  • Bonito flakes added a lot of flavour to the spinach, and makes it even more yummy.
  • Bit Bit added some egg tofu to decorate the spinach and also to add some protein.
  • This boiled spinach is actually suitable for vegetarians, by sprinkling sesame seeds over the spinach instead of bonito flakes.

Ingredients that Bit Bit used for Horenso no Ohitashi:
  1. Baby Spinach - 4 Big Cups
  2. Bonito Flakes - A Handful
  3. Water - 1.5 Cups
  4. Granulated Dashi - 1.5 Tsp
  5. Mirin - 1 Tbsp
  6. Light Soy Sauce - 1 Tbsp
  7. Salt - A Pinch

Method that Bit Bit used to cook Horenso no Ohitashi:
  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil.
  2. Add some salt.
  3. Add in the baby spinach and boil for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Remove the baby spinach and put them into a bowl of water.
  5. Grab a handful of boiled spinach and squeeze them dry.
  6. Mold them into a round rectangular shape and place them on a plate.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the rest of the spinach.
  8. Pour the water, granulated dashi, mirin and light soy sauce in a pot, mix well and bring to a boil.
  9. Pour this sauce over the boiled rectangular spinach.
  10. Add a small bunch of bonito flakes on top of the rectangular spinach.
  11. Serve and eat!
